Composite resin veneers

Composite veneers are sculpted from a tinted resin, either straight onto the tooth or in a laboratory after an impression is taken. This is the entry level. The trade-off is that the resin picks up stains over time from coffee, tea or tobacco, and its lifespan stays limited, around 3 to 7 years. It’s mechanically weaker than the ceramics, so it needs regular touch-ups.

Feldspathic ceramic veneers

Feldspathic ceramic is the oldest material used for veneers. Shaped by hand by the dental technician, it has a remarkable translucency, very close to natural enamel. It suits small corrections on healthy teeth well. Its limit? It’s relatively fragile next to the modern ceramics. Expect 10 to 15 years of service with careful upkeep.

Emax veneers in lithium disilicate

Emax veneers are now the global benchmark in cosmetic dentistry. This lithium disilicate, a glass-ceramic developed by Ivoclar Vivadent, pairs mechanical strength with natural translucency. Its flexural strength, in the region of 400 MPa, handles the demands of everyday chewing without any trouble.

The clinical data is solid. A retrospective analysis of 364 veneers followed for 10 years reports a survival rate of 97.4%, with a complication rate of only 1.64% (Aslan et al., 2019). Another study, run on 1075 lithium disilicate veneers fitted in 105 patients, found a survival rate of 99.83% (Imburgia et al., 2021). Manufacturing by CAD/CAM technology guarantees precision down to the micron, and a thickness of 0.3 to 0.5 mm is enough, which keeps as much healthy enamel as possible. Zirconia veneers

Zirconia veneers (zirconium oxide) offer the highest mechanical strength of all the options. You’ll also find it in dental crowns and implant abutments. It’s aimed mainly at patients who clench hard, in cases of pronounced teeth grinding (bruxism), or at heavily used back teeth. Its lifespan can reach 15 to 25 years. The downside: it’s a touch more opaque than Emax, less flattering on the front teeth, and it calls for more tooth preparation, from 0.5 to 0.7 mm.

Lumineers, the no-prep option

Lumineers are ultra-thin veneers, 0.2 to 0.3 mm, produced by an American laboratory. Their thinness sometimes allows fitting without any grinding of the tooth at all, a route that’s reversible in theory and appeals to a lot of patients. Their limits: a look that’s often more opaque than Emax, fewer shade nuances on offer, and a fabrication time of 3 to 4 weeks. Their strength stays below that of Emax or zirconia.
