Understanding breast reduction

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that reduces the size of the breasts while giving them a more balanced shape. It’s for women living with breast hypertrophy, meaning breasts that are too large for their build. The peri-areolar technique (round block)

For small reductions, it leaves only a scar around the areola, all but invisible once healed. It suits mild hypertrophy paired with moderate ptosis (sagging of the breast).

Choosing the vascular pedicle

Preserving the blood supply and sensation of the nipple is the real crux of the operation. The superior pedicle suits moderate reductions and protects sensation well. The inferior pedicle, for its part, secures large reductions. The supero-medial technique, increasingly common, bridges the two. For each situation, your surgeon keeps to the safest option.

How the operation and recovery go

The operation takes place under general anaesthetic and lasts 2 to 3 hours. The surgeon removes excess gland, fat and skin, reshapes the breast, then repositions the areola. A compression bra goes on straight away, to be worn day and night for 4 to 6 weeks.

Risk factors and precautions
