The operation

The operation is done under general anaesthetic, or under local anaesthetic with sedation depending on the volume to treat. The surgeon first marks the areas with a pen, then makes small incisions of 3 to 4 mm in discreet spots such as the crook of the elbow or the armpit. After the tumescent infiltration, a solution that numbs the area and limits bleeding, the VASER probe emulsifies the fat with ultrasound. The surgeon then suctions it out with fine cannulas, using precise back-and-forth movements.

Allow 1 to 2 hours. The incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures, and a compression garment is fitted straight away to limit swelling and support the skin’s retraction.

Recovery

For the first few days you’ll feel moderate pain, well controlled by painkillers. Bruising and swelling appear, which is normal, and fade over the first month. Wearing a compression garment for several weeks, as advised by your surgeon, helps limit swelling and support the skin’s retraction. You can shower from the next day.

You’ll get back to light activity after 3 to 5 days, desk work after 1 to 2 weeks, and sport after 4 to 6 weeks. Lymphatic drainage massage helps the swelling settle. The final result appears between the third and sixth month.
