What is ethnic rhinoplasty?

Every background gives the nose its own structural traits. Spotting them is already half the job: the surgeon adapts what they do to what the skin and cartilage will allow.

The nose of African heritage

Patients of African heritage often have thicker, oilier skin on the nose, a low bridge with little definition along the top, wide nostrils and a tip that isn’t very defined. These traits often call for cartilage grafts, to strengthen the structure and project the tip. Because the skin is thick, the surgeon works with more generous grafts: the contours show through less, so the build has to be bolder.

The nose of Asian heritage

Ethnic rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty

In some cases, ethnic rhinoplasty is combined with a correction of the nasal septum: this is known as septorhinoplasty. The idea is to treat the look and the function in one go, in particular the breathing problems linked to a deviated septum.
