As for lifestyle, smoking must stop at least 4 weeks before the operation. This is not up for negotiation: smoking badly hampers healing and multiplies the risk of complications. Anticoagulants and anti-inflammatories are paused 10 days before, in agreement with your doctor. You will also be advised to keep your skin well moisturised, eat a balanced diet and avoid alcohol in the 48 hours beforehand.

How the operation unfolds, step by step

It all begins with the anaesthetic, decided at the pre-anaesthetic consultation. For liposuction of both thighs, it is usually a general anaesthetic, though a local anaesthetic with sedation is possible in some cases.

The surgeon then makes small incisions of 3 to 4 millimetres, placed to stay as discreet as possible. They infiltrate the tumescent solution, then introduce the suction cannulas. In standard liposuction, a back-and-forth movement breaks up and draws off the fat. With the VASER technique, the ultrasound first liquefies the fat cells, making the suction gentler and more precise.

Once the suction is done, the surgeon checks the symmetry between the two thighs, smooths the contours, closes the incisions and applies a compression dressing. The whole thing takes between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the extent of the area treated.

What is recovery like?

What are the risks of thigh liposuction?

Like any operation, thigh liposuction is not without risks, even if they stay limited. The most common complications are mild and temporary: bruising, lingering swelling, a temporary loss of feeling in the treated area. More rarely, you might see surface irregularities, a seroma (a build-up of fluid) or a haematoma.

The rate of major complications stays below 1%, while minor ones affect 3 to 5% of patients. A systematic review published in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in 2023 confirms that liposuction, carried out in the right conditions, offers a good benefit-to-risk balance, with complications that are usually minor and short-lived (Willet et al., 2023).
