What happens during the operation?

Depending on the number of areas, the operation is done under local anaesthetic with sedation (for one or two small areas) or under general anaesthetic for larger treatments. Expect 1 to 3 hours in theatre.

The steps are well rehearsed: careful marking of the areas, injecting a solution that makes the fat easier to remove, passing the Vaser ultrasound through to break up the fat, then gently suctioning it out with the cannula. Your vital signs are monitored throughout.

What is recovery like?

After the operation you usually stay one night at the clinic, under observation. After that, you wear a compression garment for 4 to 6 weeks: it supports the skin as it tightens and refines the contours. Bruising and swelling in the first few days are normal, and they settle bit by bit.

Your surgeon advises at least a week of rest. You’re back to everyday activities within 5 to 7 days, but for sport you’ll need to wait 4 to 6 weeks. Your figure settles into its final shape after 3 to 6 months, once the swelling has completely gone. The fat cells that are removed don’t come back, as long as you keep a healthy lifestyle to hold on to the result over time.

What are the risks of liposuction?

Like any surgery, liposuction carries some risk. Even so, the most common complications are minor: lingering bruises, small contour irregularities or swelling that hangs around. Across a series of 1,486 Vaser cases, minor complications came up in only 3%, which says a lot about how reliable the technique is. Another series of 261 cases, covering patients operated on between 2005 and 2020, confirmed the safety and effectiveness of this latest-generation ultrasound liposuction, with a high satisfaction rate.
