Liposuction in Istanbul: the procedure in detail

Liposuction, sometimes called lipoaspiration, is one of the most widely performed cosmetic procedures in the world. In 2024 it was still among the two most common operations globally, just behind eyelid surgery (ISAPS). The idea behind it is easy to grasp: remove the localised pockets of fat you cannot shift, even with exercise and a balanced diet. We all know those stubborn bulges.

The liposuction techniques we use at our partner clinic

There is not one single liposuction, but several approaches. Our surgeons choose the one best suited to the areas you want treated, the quality of your skin and the amount of fat to remove.

Tumescent liposuction

This is the basis of modern liposuction. The surgeon first infiltrates the area with an anaesthetic solution, a mix of local anaesthetic (lidocaine) and a product that tightens the blood vessels (adrenaline). This solution softens the fat and greatly limits bleeding during the operation. The softened fat is then suctioned out with fine cannulas, the small tubes inserted through tiny incisions.

Now the standard everywhere in the world, this technique gives the surgeon excellent control over how much is removed and over the shaping of the figure. Depending on how much area needs treating, it is carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation or under general anaesthetic.

VASER liposuction (ultrasound)

VASER, which stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance, is a real step forward. The probe emits ultrasound that targets only the fat cells and liquefies them, while sparing the vessels, nerves and collagen around them. The work becomes more precise and the tissues are better preserved.

The benefits are well documented. A study of 1486 patients who had VASER liposuction reported a minor-complication rate of just 3% (Kandulu, 2024). The technique also helps the skin retract better, a real plus when skin elasticity is slightly reduced. On top of that, the ultrasound stimulates collagen production, which firms the skin in the following weeks. Liposuction combined with other procedures

Liposuction is often combined with other work, for a more complete reshaping. When loose skin comes with the fat, after a pregnancy or major weight loss, it is frequently paired with a tummy tuck in Turkey. The removed fat can also be reinjected: this is the principle behind fat grafting, a transfer of your own fat, used to shape the buttocks (BBL), the breasts (breast fat transfer) or the face.

The areas of the body that can be treated

Liposuction adapts to many parts of the body. The tummy is still the most requested area, followed by the hips (those famous love handles), the thighs, the back and the arms. More delicate areas like the double chin, the neck, the knees or the calves can also be treated, though they call for a more expert hand because the tissue is finer.

Good news: our surgeons can treat several areas during a single procedure, for a balanced result across the whole figure. The number of areas is decided at the consultation, based on your body shape, your general health and the amount to remove. For your safety, international guidelines set a limit of around 5 litres of fat suctioned per session.

Are you a good candidate?

Liposuction is for people who have localised, stubborn pockets of fat, a stable weight close to their natural weight, and skin that keeps good elasticity. One important point, often misunderstood: it is not a way to lose weight. It reshapes the figure by erasing specific deposits; it does not make you lose weight.

Some situations rule the procedure out: severe cardiovascular disease, clotting disorders, poorly controlled diabetes, a current infection or pregnancy. Obesity, with a BMI above 30, is another, not because it is technically impossible, but because the risk of complications climbs. In that case, bariatric surgery such as a sleeve or a bypass may be worth discussing first.

One last point, and not a minor one: stop smoking at least 4 weeks before the operation. Smoking damages the small blood vessels, slows healing and clearly raises the risk of complications. Do also mention any blood-thinning or anti-inflammatory medication; your surgeon will tell you when to pause it.

How the procedure works

Depending on the number of areas and the volume to suction, liposuction is carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation or under general anaesthetic. Just before, the surgeon marks the areas to treat on your skin while you are standing, then takes reference photos.

In theatre, the surgeon infiltrates the tumescent solution, then slides the cannulas in through small 3 to 5 mm incisions hidden in the natural folds of the skin. The fat is suctioned layer by layer, with controlled back-and-forth movements, for an even result with no irregularities. With VASER, an ultrasound probe emulsifies the fat first: the whole thing is even gentler on the tissues.

Allow between 1 and 3 hours for the procedure, depending on how much area is treated. At the end, the surgeon applies dressings and has you put on a compression garment, to be worn over the following weeks.

Recovery, step by step

The aftermath follows a fairly predictable timeline. In the first few days, some oedema (swelling) and bruising appear on the treated areas. That is normal and fades on its own. The pain, which is moderate, feels like bad muscle ache and settles well with the painkillers you are given.

The compression garment is worn day and night for 4 to 6 weeks. It brings down the swelling, helps the skin retract and refines the result. Lymphatic drainage sessions, a gentle massage that clears fluid, may be recommended to reduce the oedema more quickly.

So when can you get back to normal life? Light daily activities, after 7 to 10 days. Desk work, from the second week. Exercise, gradually, after 4 to 6 weeks. As for the final result, it shows between the 3rd and 6th month, once the swelling has completely gone and the tissues have settled.

Safety: what the data says

Recent studies are reassuring, provided the procedure is carried out by a qualified surgeon in a suitable setting. A meta-analysis published in 2024 in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, covering 29368 patients, found an overall complication rate of 2.6% (Comerci et al., 2024). The vast majority of these complications are minor and resolve on their own.

The most common are contour irregularities (2.3%), temporary hyperpigmentation (1.5%) and seromas, those small pockets of fluid (0.6%). Serious complications, on the other hand, remain very rare: the risk of infection is 0.02%, and of a blood clot in the veins 0.017%. VASER shows figures that are lower still, with 4.6% complications, mostly minor, and 86% of patients happy to recommend the procedure (Tran et al., 2022).
