What a dental implant actually is

A dental implant is a small screw made of biocompatible titanium (or zirconia, for patients allergic to metal) that replaces the root of a missing tooth. Placed into the jawbone by a specialist surgeon, it slowly fuses with the bone through osseointegration (the natural bond that forms between bone and implant). Once that fusion is complete, an abutment is fixed onto the implant, then a ceramic crown finishes the restoration.

You get an artificial tooth that looks, works and feels like a real one. Unlike a bridge, which means grinding down the healthy teeth on either side, or a removable denture, which can slip and rub, an implant stands on its own: stable and permanent.

The bridge means grinding down the teeth next door to use them as anchors, so sacrificing healthy tissue; its average lifespan is around 10 to 15 years, against more than 20 years for a well-maintained implant. The removable denture (a partial or full plate) is the cheapest option, but also the least comfortable: it can move, irritate the gums and does nothing to stop the bone melting away.

Risks and contraindications

Among the possible complications: an infection at the surgical site, temporary nerve irritation, or the implant failing to fuse. Over 10 to 15 years, modern implant systems show failure rates of a few per cent (Albrektsson et al., 2022). Smoking, poorly controlled diabetes and certain medications are among the main contraindications.
